Safety focused, quality engineered, production tested.

Improving safety was a key focus for Auckland Meat Processors (AMP) and the Guardian Bandsaw delivered more than what was expected. The new saw has not only provided a safer workplace, it has helped the team improve their overall bandsaw operation and cutting technique.

Visibility of your bandsaw operation

The Guardian’s online management software features a reporting dashboard combined with an instant alert and reporting system. This provides a comprehensive view of the bandsaw operation, trigger events, specific user incidents and trends, and blade performance reporting. The easy-to-use system allows your data to be configured in a number of ways to create custom reports. This enables you to look deeply at operational use, the way staff are interacting with the saw and respond to trigger events quickly.

Protection of operators through advanced vision detection

The multi-view four camera vision system can register a saw operator’s blue gloves in 3D. The system detects a safety zone set at 40mm all around and up the full cutting height of the bandsaw blade. The system is wire-free and operators are not connected to the saw in any way. This enables operators to freely move around the boning room floor while also maintaining the safety system for all staff wearing blue gloves who are within close proximity of the blade.

High speed braking system that is easy to reset

Once triggered, our custom-built braking system de-tensions the blade and brings it to a complete stop in milliseconds. This ensures the operator's hand is protected from coming into contact with the moving blade. Because the blade is de-tensioned, the activation is not violent and does not damage the blade. The system is quickly rest with the push of a button.

Fast and simple blade replacement

Blades can be replaced on a regular cycle with minimum down time. The Guardian accepts all commercially available blades with the individual blade specifications loaded into the management system. With push button reset, when a blade is installed or following a trigger event, the Guardian re-tensions the blade to the correct specification.

Optional contact sensing detection system

To provide additional peace of mind, the Guardian Bandsaw can be fitted with a contact sensing detection system. The connection method is simple, the on-screen software carefully guides the operator through the sensing system’s safety checks. This additional detection system means any obscured parts of the operator's hands are protected – the braking system triggers immediately when the blade contacts the sensing glove. When combined with our industry-leading vision system, the Guardian delivers unparalleled operator protection. Watch how the contact sensing system is set up here.

Safety Reporting

Creating a safer workplace through better information and reporting

The Guardian management software is an industry first and sets a new benchmark for safety performance reporting on bandsaws. Staff are able to log into the tool from anywhere in the world to access a comprehensive suite of reports and charts showing performance of the bandsaw and the interactions of staff during shifts.

The software is simple to use and powerful in creating meaningful reports that can help change behaviour and improve safety and training systems.

The management system also monitors and reports on: number of cuts per hour, total cuts per blade and the cuts per current runtime. The total power consumption of the bandsaw is also reported. This information enables a detailed understanding of blade performance vs cost along with optimum operator usage to ensure blade longevity.

About

Innovation is in our DNA

The Guardian Bandsaw has been developed by kanDO Innovation through a collaborative partnership with the meat processing industry in New Zealand. Starting in 2015, the journey began with an objective to develop a safety system that provides a reliable and more comprehensive solution for meat processing companies.

Design and development of the unique vision detection system was combined with the manufacture of a purpose built stainless steel bandsaw. Rather than modifying an existing commercial bandsaw, the physical bandsaw was designed from the ground up which enabled the team to incorporate innovative features as a result of industry engagement.

kanDO Innovation has a long history of developing vision detection systems for clients across a number of primary industries in Australasia. Working through the innovation process from idea and design development to commercialisation, kanDO has experience building solutions that are proven in rugged and challenging manufacturing environments. This vision detection experience also includes developing the world’s first Automated Mussel Opener, which has been deployed in numerous processing plants across Australasia.
