Bandsaw safety checklist

Sixteen reminders for trained operators: preparation, controlled cutting and safe intervention. Review against your machine manual and approved site procedure before use.

Use this printable bandsaw safety checklist to reinforce your approved operating procedure. It brings together 16 reminders for trained, authorized operators of vertical bandsaws, covering preparation, cutting and what to do when something is wrong.

Before use: a supervisor must check that the sheet suits the machine and task. It is an operating reminder, not a machine inspection certificate or permission to start work.

Print your checklist

Print at actual size, check that no text is cropped and keep the sheet legible where operators will use it.

What the checklist covers

  • Before starting: authorization, instructions, clothing and PPE, the glove rule, the work area, machine condition, safeguards, guard setting, feed aids and prescribed safety checks.
  • While cutting: hand position, controlled feeding, stopping before intervention and staying at the controls.
  • When work changes: task procedures, required energy controls, reporting defects, preventing unauthorized restart and reporting near-misses.

How to use it at your site

  1. Compare the checklist with the current machine manual and your approved site procedure. Resolve differences before using it.
  2. Add the site or machine identifier and the approved procedure reference. Include any additional machine-specific checks in your controlled procedure.
  3. Explain the reminders during practical training. Show operators the permitted feed method and the conditions that require them to stop.
  4. Keep the current sheet available and replace it when the machine, task or procedure changes.

If a safeguard is missing, a check fails or the method is unclear, stop. Report the issue and do not resume until it is resolved and restart is authorized.

Common questions

Are all 16 items pre-start checks?

No. The sheet includes reminders for the whole task. Complete the machine-specific pre-start inspection and safety-device tests required by your manual and site procedure separately.

Does a completed checklist make the machine safe?

No. A checklist cannot establish that guarding, maintenance, training or the work method is adequate. It supports a safety system; it does not replace one.

Should an operator wear gloves?

Follow the requirements for the exact machine and task. Gloves can protect against some handling hazards and can also create an entanglement hazard. Resolve conflicting instructions with the responsible person before operating. Cut-resistant gloves do not make blade contact safe.

Is an emergency stop enough before cleaning?

Stopping the blade is the first step. Follow the machine’s approved procedure for cleaning or other intervention, including the energy controls it requires. A stop button is not an energy-isolating device. If the task is not covered by your procedure, ask your supervisor before proceeding.
